What a hotel really costs in Vietnam

Vietnam is one of those countries where the flight is the expensive part. Once you land, a comfortable room costs less than lunch in Amsterdam. But how much less, and does it differ much between Hanoi and a small town in the north? We measured it rather than guessed.

How we measured this

For each of the nine places below we pulled the live room rates for everything bookable at that moment — two people, two nights, midweek. We did that three separate times, in November, December and January, and took the middle figure of the three. Measuring once is how you accidentally report a festival week as the normal price.

The rates come from the hotel search engine Staybello. From is the cheapest room we found anywhere in that place; typical is the middle of the market — half the rooms cost less, half cost more. That second number is the one to plan with.

What a room costs, place by place

Per night, for a double room, in euros. Sorted from cheapest to most expensive.

  • Hue — from € 9, typically € 26 a night. 89% of rooms free to cancel, 50% include breakfast.
  • Nha Trang — from € 10, typically € 29 a night. 86% of rooms free to cancel, 62% include breakfast.
  • Sapa — from € 9, typically € 35 a night. 82% of rooms free to cancel, 64% include breakfast.
  • Ha Long — from € 7, typically € 39 a night. 86% of rooms free to cancel, 69% include breakfast.
  • Da Nang — from € 13, typically € 43 a night. 88% of rooms free to cancel, 65% include breakfast.
  • Hoi An — from € 14, typically € 54 a night. 92% of rooms free to cancel, 69% include breakfast.
  • Hanoi — from € 18, typically € 80 a night. 68% of rooms free to cancel, 73% include breakfast.
  • Ho Chi Minh City — from € 17, typically € 82 a night. 79% of rooms free to cancel, 60% include breakfast.
  • Phu Quoc — from € 15, typically € 101 a night. 78% of rooms free to cancel, 64% include breakfast.

The short answer

A comfortable double room in Vietnam costs € 26 to € 101 a night depending on where you are, and the middle of that range — somewhere around € 40 — buys a great deal more than the same money would anywhere in Europe.

For perspective: the most expensive place on this list, Phu Quoc at € 101, is still cheaper than a typical night in Barcelona, Madrid or Brussels.

The cities cost three times the small towns

This is the clearest pattern in the numbers, and it is worth planning around:

  • Hue — typically € 26 a night
  • Nha Trang — typically € 29 a night
  • Sapa — typically € 35 a night
  • Ha Long — typically € 39 a night

Against:

  • Phu Quoc — typically € 101
  • Ho Chi Minh City — typically € 82
  • Hanoi — typically € 80

Hue is the standout. At a typical € 26 a night it is the cheapest place we measured in Vietnam, and it sits between Hanoi and Hoi An on the usual north-to-south route — so it costs you no detour at all. If your itinerary has a spare night, that is where to spend it.

Hoi An at € 54 is the interesting middle: more than the small towns, far less than the cities, and the standard of room you get for it is noticeably higher.

You can book almost anything and still change your mind

This is the finding we did not expect, and it is the most useful one for anyone travelling Vietnam independently. The share of rooms you can still cancel for free:

  • Hoi An — 92 per cent of rooms
  • Hue — 89 per cent of rooms
  • Da Nang — 88 per cent of rooms
  • Nha Trang — 86 per cent of rooms
  • Ha Long — 86 per cent of rooms

Between 68 and 92 per cent across the country. For comparison, in Milan that figure is 23 per cent and in Munich 29. In much of Europe a flexible rate is something you pay extra for; in Vietnam it is simply how most places sell.

That changes how you plan a trip here. You do not need to keep your itinerary open by leaving rooms unbooked — you can book the whole route now, at today's prices, and rearrange it later if the weather in Sapa turns or you decide to stay another three days in Hoi An. Filtering on rooms with free cancellation costs you almost nothing here, and it removes the one real risk of booking ahead.

Breakfast is usually in the price

Between half and three quarters of rooms include breakfast, depending where you are — 73 per cent in Hanoi, 69 in Hoi An and Ha Long, 50 in Hue. Worth checking before you budget two extra coffees a day, because on a room of € 30 a night breakfast for two is a real share of the bill.

What we would do with this

  • Spend your nights where they are cheap and your days where they are not. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are worth seeing but cost double; two nights in each is usually plenty.
  • Give Hue the night you were unsure about. Cheapest on the list, and on the way.
  • Book the route now, flexibly. With this much free cancellation there is little reason to travel with nothing booked.
  • Do not chase the «from» price. It exists, but it is a dorm bed or a room with no window. The typical figure is what your trip will actually cost.
